The 2008-09 OHL regular season has already witnessed the breaking of two incredible records.
Cory Tanaka of the Belleville Bulls set a new record for most career games played with 329 when he laced the blades on February 22 in Brampton. Tanaka passed Cody Thornton who played in 328 games between the 2002-03 and 2006-07 seasons with Belleville and Sault Ste. Marie. Tanaka, a 20-year-old from Stouffville, ON, entered the league with the Plymouth Whalers in 2004-05 where he played 67 games as a rookie.
This season Tanaka played in 67 games for the Bulls for a record number of 337.
Thomas McCollum of the Brampton Battalion set a new record for most career shutouts with 15 when he shutout the Oshawa Generals on January 29th. Gerald Coleman of the London Knights held the previous mark of 14 which he recorded over a three-year career with the London Knights beginning in 2002-03. McCollum, a 19-year-old from Sanborn, New York, recently raised his record number to 16 when he shutout the Niagara IceDogs on February 27.
McCollum has seven shutouts this season with 16 over his three-year career. In addition to building his career record, he is chased the single season shutout record of nine currently held by Don Lockhart in 1949-50 with Toronto of the OHA. Len Broderick of Toronto had eight in 1956-57 as did Coleman in 2004-05.
