Jr. Canadiens win 2008 OHL CupCreated: Mar 23, 2008
The final of the 2008 OHL Showcase Tournament for the OHL Cup featured a rematch of the Greater Toronto Hockey League Championship Series as the Toronto Marlboros took on the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. The Marlboros were the first ones to light the lamp as Michael Hawkrigg found the back of the net off of a shot from just above the face-off dot 5:03 into the contest.
The Jr. Candiens offense responded with two goals of their own before the end of the first frame. The first from Tyler Toffoli and a power play marker from Cody McNaughton on a set up from Toffoli. The first period came to a close with the Jr. Canadiens leading 2-1. Less than a minute into the second period John McFarland picked the top corner from the top of the slot to beat Jon-Paul Anderson and extend the Jr. Canadiens’ lead to 3-1. The Marlies reduced the lead to a single goal when Freddie Hamilton capped off a solid individual effort by beating Canadiens’ goalie Spencer Sommerville with a backhand shot that found the top corner of the net. The score remained 3-2 in favour of the Jr. Canadiens entering the third period. Chasen Balisy restored the Jr. Canadiens two goal lead 3:19 into the period off of a feed from Devante Smith-Pelly. Tournament MVP, McFarland iced the game for the Jr. Canadiens with his second goal of the game with just over a minute remaining in the contest. Toffoli was named player of the game for the Jr. Canadiens with a goal and three assists. Marlboros’ goaltender, Anderson turned in a solid performance to earn his team’s player of the game. McFarland was named the tournament MVP after scoring eight goals and adding seven assists for 15 points in seven games. |
