Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for October.

West Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for October in the West Division is left winger Garret Ross of the Saginaw Spirit. Ross, 17, a native of Dearborn Heights, Michigan is currently enrolled at Heritage High School in Saginaw. “Garret is carrying an 88% average in his classes which leads all Spirit players while maintaining a full course load,” commented Spirit Assistant Coach Adam Mattson. Ross originally had a verbal commitment to Ferris State prior to joining the Spirit this season.
Midwest Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for October in the Midwest Division is left winger Carter Sandlak of the Guelph Storm. Sandlak, 16, a native of London, Ontario currently is a Grade 11 student at Our Lady of Lourdes in Guelph. “Carter is a joy to have in his class, a hard worker and the top of his class,” commented Donna Rawbone, Academic Advisor for the Storm. Carter is carrying a full high school course load and was the Storm’s first round selection in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.
Central Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for October in the Central Division is defenseman Cameron Wind of the Brampton Battalion. Wind, 17, a native of Barrie, Ontario is a Grade 12 student at Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton. Battalion Academic Advisor Ted Blackburn had this to say about Cameron, “Although early in the semester, teachers are seeing excellent progress in Cameron’s work. He is motivated, hard-working student who takes his school work seriously. Cameron’s Environmental Geography teacher plans to use one of his assignments as an example for others to follow. To date, he has perfect attendance in all of his classes.”
East Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for October in the East Division is defenseman Erik Gudbranson of the Kingston Frontenacs. Gudbranson, 17, a native of Orleans, Ontario, is currently attending Ecole Secondaire Mille-Iles in Kingston. “Erik is a very dedicated student with a realistic goal of achieving his goal of pursuing a business degree at university,” commented Mike Hamilton, Academic Advisor for the Frontenacs. Gudbranson was the Frontenacs first round selection in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection and is expected to be a first round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
OHL Academic Highlights: • OHL players successfully completed 97% of high school courses during the 2008-09 season.
• Of the 54 overage players that competed in the league during the 2008-09 season, 24 have signed professional hockey contracts while 30 have accessed their academic scholarships in 2009-10 at various institutions across North America.
• OHL teams contributed just under $2 million in 2008-09 towards scholarships for current and graduate players.
