OHL Announces Academic Players of the Month

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Academic Players of the Month for February.

West Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the West Division is defenceman Cody Sol of the Saginaw Spirit. Sol, 18, a native of Woodstock, Ontario is currently enrolled at Nouvel Catholic Central High School in Saginaw. “Cody works very hard to maintain his grades. He is a very dedicated and determined young man. It has been great to watch Cody grow academically,” commented Spirit Academic Advisor Margie Ash.

Midwest Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the Midwest Division is centre Peter Holland of the Guelph Storm. Holland, 18, a native of Caledon, Ontario currently is a Grade 12 student at Our Lady of Lourdes in Guelph. “Peter is a star both on the ice and off the ice. He strives for perfection in everything he does. He is taking all Grade 12 University Prep Level courses and achieving an average of 87%. Peter is an excellent role model for the rest of the team, helping others when they need it,” commented Donna Rawbone, Academic Advisor for the Storm. Holland is expected to be a first round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Central Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the Central Division is centre Matt Duchene of the Brampton Battalion. Duchene, 18, a native of Haliburton, Ontario is a Grade 12 student at Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton. Battalion Academic Advisor Ted Blackburn had this to say about Matt, “During his time at Turner Fenton, Matt has shown that he can successfully balance the demands of school with his commitment to the team. Matt takes both very seriously.” Duchene is expected to be a first round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

East Division - The OHL Academic Player of the Month for February in the East Division is defenceman Taylor Doherty of the Kingston Frontenacs. Doherty, 18, a native of Cambridge, Ontario, is currently attending Holy Cross High school in Kingston. “Taylor is a very dedicated and committed student. He maintains an honour roll standing with a realistic plan to pursue a medical degree as a post hockey destination,” commented Mike Hamilton, Academic Advisor for the Frontenacs. Doherty was Kingston’s 2nd Round selection in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection.

90% of the players currently playing in the Ontario Hockey League are attending high school or post-secondary institutions.

The Ontario Hockey League recently awarded 316 scholarships to current and former OHL players.
