IceDogs win OHL Showcase Cup Final
Mississauga IceDogs 2, Toronto Marlboros 1
The final of the 2007 Ontario Hockey League Showcase Tournament featured a rematch of the GTHL final that concluded this past Monday with the IceDogs winning the series four games-to-two.
On Sunday afternoon, Ontario Hockey League Scouts, parents and families looked on to witness the Championship game between the Mississauga IceDogs and the Toronto Marlboros. While both teams played a tight checking game early, Mississauga had multiple opportunities to get on the score sheet but were denied by the strong play of Marlboros' goaltender Michael Zador. The two teams remained scoreless until the 2:32 mark of the second period when Michael Santini was able to solve Zador on a set up from Anthony Mastrodicasa and Brett Appio. Zador continued his strong play stopping an IceDogs penalty shot at 8:13 of the second period. The crowd was treated with back and forth action by both teams as the game went on. The IceDogs would extend their lead to two on a goal by Ben Chiarot assisted by Casey Cizikas and Michael Fine at 1:42 of the third period. Twenty four seconds later, Toronto would finally solve goaltender Christopher Perugini on a goal by Michael Catenacci, assisted by Daniel Erlich and Marc Anthony Zanetti to pull within one. The next 13 minutes presented hard hitting back and forth action as the Marlboros tried desperately to tie the game at two. Michael Zador's solid play gave the Marlboros a chance to tie the game but as time slipped off the clock, the Marlboros could not beat Perugini a second time for the equalizer. The Mississauga IceDogs would come away victorious and be crowned OHL Showcase Cup Champions for 2006-2007.
