Belleville Bulls General Manager and Head Coach George Burnett was inducted into the Township of Scugog Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony held last week in Port Perry. Burnett was honoured for what has been an extremely successful hockey career to date.
The Scugog Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2006 with the express intent to formally recognize Scugog’s sporting history and traditions. It was also mandated to select local athletes, teams and builders for special recognition as a result of outstanding athletic accomplishments at the regional, provincial, national or international level.
"Port Perry was a great place to be a kid," Burnett told newsDurhamregion.com. "The opportunities and experiences hockey has provided me are endless ... to travel the world and represent your country, but I've always been very proud to call Port Perry my home."
Burnett began his coaching career following a playing career with the London Knights and McGill University. His coaching career includes two OHL Coach of the Year Awards, a Calder Cup Championship in 1993, an OHL Championship in 1997 and a Gold Medal with Team Canada at the 2001 Under 18 Six Nations Tournament. He also served as Head Coach of the Edmonton Oilers during the 1994-1995 season and is the active leader in career OHL coaching victories.
Burnett is now in his sixth season as Head Coach and General Manager with Belleville where he has led the Bulls to three consecutive East Division Championships and a Memorial Cup appearance in 2008. He currently sits second in franchise history with 199 regular season wins with the Bulls.
