Brown maintained an 80% average in a full course load in his grade 12 graduating year at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School in Guelph. He has two open level physical education courses with 87% marks each, and six university prep level courses - World History (83%), English (70%). English Writer's Craft (78%), Exercise Science (78%), Challenge and Change in Society (87%) and Philosophy (78%). Brown plans to attend the University of Guelph next year to study History and Criminal Justice.
On the ice, Brown scored a team-high 34 goals, along with 42 assists for 76 points in 58 games with the Storm. The third year right winger is a top-rated prospect for the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Nashville next month.
The trophy, which honours Bobby Smith, a former Ottawa 67's star, is symbolic of the high standard of excellence that Smith displayed on the ice, as well as in the classroom, during his outstanding junior career. Each team 's nominee for the award becomes a member of the OHL Scholastic Team.
The Ontario Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year is selected by a committee of OHL Educational Consultants headed by chairperson Donna Rawbone, Educational Consultant for the Guelph Storm, who assesses each nominee's academic achievements and Frank Bonello, Director of National Hockey League Central Scouting, who evaluates each nominee's hockey ability.
