The Ontario Hockey League today announced that
Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires has won the Emms Family Award as the OHL’s rookie of the year for the 2007-08 season.
Hall, a 16-year-old from Kingston, was the second overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection last May. He led all first year players with 45 goals to go along with 39 assists and finished second among OHL rookies with 84 points in 63 games. Hall also helped Team Ontario win the World Under-17 Challenge in London in January and was a member of Canada’s Gold Medal winning Under-18 team last week in Russia.
Hall started his OHL career with a pair of goals in Windsor’s 10-3 win over Erie in their season opener on Sept. 21. He enjoyed a four goal, five point game against Erie on Oct.13 and another one on March 6 against Sault Ste. Marie. He enjoyed a 12-game scoring streak near the end of the regular season that included 17 goals and 31 points and was named the OHL’s rookie of the month for March.
The Emms Family Award is presented annually to the top first year player as selected by OHL general managers. Teams were not permitted to vote for a player from their own hockey club. Players received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote.
Hall received 89 points in the voting process while
Mikkel Boedker of the Kitchener Rangers was second with 31 points.
Casey Cizikas of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors was third with 28 points.
Former winners of the Emms Family Award include Wayne Gretzky (Sault Ste. Marie, 1977-78),
Joe Thornton (Sault Ste. Marie, 1995-96), Owen Nolan (Cornwall, 1988-89) and
Rick Nash (London, 2000-01).
Patrick Kane of the London Knights won the award last season. Hall is the third Spitfires’ player to win the award following
Cory Stillman, who won it in 1990-91, and Peter Sarnia, who won for the 1996-97 season.
The Emms Family Award was donated by Leighton "Hap" Emms, former owner of the Barrie, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines OHL franchises.
The OHL also announced the All-Rookie Team for the 2007-08 season.
Hall was named left winger while Cizikas was named centre and Boedker was named right winger.
Ryan Ellis of the Spitfires and
Cameron Gaunce of the Majors were named the defencemen and
Josh Unice of the Rangers was named goaltender.
