The Ontario Hockey League today announced that rookie forward Nikolay Goldobin of the Sarnia Sting is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 6 after scoring eight goals with four assists for 12 points in five games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.
Goldobin’s week included two four-point games highlighted by a four-goal game Tuesday against the London Knights. After scoring a goal on Monday as second star of a 3-2 loss to the Knights, Goldobin picked up the first multi-goal game of his OHL career leading the Sting to a 6-5 overtime win that ended the Knights’ winning-streak at 24 games. Trailing 3-0 after the first period in that contest, Goldobin scored three goals in the second period and later netted the overtime winner as first star of the game. He claimed first star honours again on Friday with four points in an 8-5 win over the Windsor Spitfires scoring twice with two assists. He recorded a third straight multi-point game on Saturday night in Erie scoring once with two assists as part of a 5-4 shootout win over the Otters. Goldobin was held off the scoresheet on Sunday but the Sting picked up their fourth straight win with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Niagara IceDogs and are currently first place in the OHL’s West Division with 51 points.
Goldobin, a 17-year-old from Mockobckar, Russia, was selected 36th overall by the Sting in the 2012 CHL Import Draft. Not eligible for the NHL Draft until 2014, Goldobin leads all OHL rookies with 21 goals in 40 games and is second in scoring with 39 points.
Also considered for the award this week was Ryan Rupert of the London Knights with nine points in four games including two goals and seven assists, and Ryan Kujawinski of the Kingston Frontenacs who scored five goals with three assists for eight points in four games. In goal, rookie Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers went 4-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.23 and save percentage of .934.
