St. Catharines New Spectator Facility Officially Breaks Ground!

Thursday marked yet another big step in the spectator facility timeline with the official start of construction of the St. Catharines Spectator Facility beginning during a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning.

Thursday’s event signaled the beginning of the transformation of 55 McGuire St. from the Lower Level Parking lot to the $50 million multi-purpose facility hosting a range of entertainment events, including Niagara IceDogs Hockey.

"Today’s groundbreaking is spreading a lot of holiday cheer," said Mayor McMullan. "Our Spectator Facility is part of Council’s vision to make our downtown a more vibrant, livable community where people will be exposed to arts, culture and entertainment. It’s going to enrich our Garden City and be a facility for which we can all be proud."

Mayor McMullan was joined at the groundbreaking event by St. Catharines MPP Jim Bradley, Tom Rankin of Rankin Construction and Bob Cavalieri of SMG Ltd.  There were a great deal of others in attendance at the event including members of the IceDogs organization, IceDogs fans, members of the corporate community and member of St. Catharines City Council.

"We are seeing our city’s downtown core revitalized by construction activity", said Bradley. "The Province is pleased to be part of St. Catharines’ new Spectator Facility."

The project is being paid for by the City of St. Catharines with the support of the Province of Ontario, which provided $1million in funding for the project. Rankin Construction has committed to provide physical access from St. Paul Street to the facility in the form of two pedestrian bridges. SMG has committed $1 million in equipment for the facility which will allow it to host a diverse entertainment selection.

Ball-Rankin Construction Inc. was awarded the contract to design and build the new Spectator Facility by City Council in October through a process lead by a team of City staff, councillors and project manager CBRE Limited. SMG will be operating the facility.

Preliminary work for the Spectator Facility began on Dec. 5. Full construction is scheduled to begin in January. The Spectator Facility is scheduled to be completed in September 2014 in time for the start of the IceDogs 2014-15 season.
