Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League is pleased to announce that member clubs combined to collect over 52,000 teddy bears leading up to the winter break this season to benefit families and children in need throughout their local communities at Christmas.
In addition, several OHL member clubs held other holiday fundraising events at home games combining to raise over $20,000 for local charities and their toy and canned food drives.
Each season many OHL clubs host Teddy Bear Toss Nights which have become some of the most popular promotions on the OHL calendar. At these games fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear to toss on the ice when the home team scores their first goal of the game.
The London Knights led the way again this season with a record 10,671 teddy bears collected on December 14 when Seth Griffith scored a first period goal against the Owen Sound Attack. Several other OHL clubs continued to set new team records for bears collected as a result of this promotion.
The OHL regular season resumes on Thursday December 27, 2012, with two games on the schedule including the Plymouth Whalers hosting the Saginaw Spirit at 2PM and the London Knights hosting the Windsor Spitfires at 7PM.
