SHAWINIGAN, Tuesday, May 22, 2012 – Defense was the name of the game in the fifth round-robin contest of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup with the London Knights tightening play and taking it with a 4-1 victory over the Oil Kings.

The Knights took very little time to open the scoring. After a turnover behind the Edmonton net, Ryan Rupert accepted a pass in the crease from his brother Matt and pushed the puck in between the pads of Laurent Brossoit. London doubled their lead on a three-on-two break. Bo Horvat jumped on a juicy rebound before burying his first goal of the tournament at 11:20.

The Oil Kings managed to cut the lead to one with three seconds left in the first period as Keegan Lowe lit up the red light.

In the second period, the Oil Kings burst into the offensive zone and created a great scoring chance but the puck hit the crossbar and stayed out. The puck then found its way onto Max Domi’s stick on the counterattack. Greg McKegg completed the play off a rebound, putting the Knights up 3-1.

Play was tight in the third period. There were few shots on goal and few scoring chances. The Oil Kings made a late burst in the final five minutes of the game, but London kept Edmonton off the score sheet and finally won it 4-1 with Austin Watson adding an empty-netter.

Goaltender Michael Houser earned his second win of the tournament after pushing away 20 shots.

Austin Watson was named the game’s first star.

With the win, the Knights have secured at least a berth in Friday's Semi-Final but must await the outcome of Wednesday's contest between the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Shawinigan Cataractes.  The Oil Kings will play the loser of that contest in a Tie-Breaker Game on Thursday.  The Knights would advance directly to the Championship Final with a 2-1 record if the Sea Dogs emerge victorious against the Cataractes.

Game six of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup goes tomorrow as the Shawinigan Cataractes battle the Saint John Sea Dogs live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports starting at 7 pm ET.
