CHL Launches 2013 Movember Campaign

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced the launch of the third season of a league-wide initiative with member clubs and players participating in Movember to help change the face of men’s health.

As an official global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.  During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. Through the power of the moustache, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

“The energy and commitment of participants across the CHL for this event has been incredible,” said CHL President David Branch.  “Cancer touches most if not all of us, either directly or indirectly through friends and family, and it has been outstanding to see the overwhelming support our players, teams, and on-ice officials have received across the CHL in raising over $300,000 in two seasons supporting this worthy cause.”

Last season 50 teams consisting of 792 registered members across the CHL raised $175,583 and ranked 12th among all registered Canadian networks through their participation in Movember.  The CHL helped contribute to the over $37 million raised by participants across Canada and the $117 million raised worldwide.

For the third straight year the CHL invites all member clubs to participate in this event with many teams already signed up and planning unique initiatives in their local markets.  Players will be registered with their clubs under the CHL platform on movember.com and raise sponsorship dollars by growing and grooming their moustache and encouraging monetary donations through family, friends, fans, and local sponsors.

Each player on their team will be ranked and each team as a collective will be ranked throughout the CHL.  Teams will be competing for the top spot in fundraising dollars and the winner will be presented with a special Movember trophy, claimed back-to-back by the “MOfficials” consisting of Western Hockey League officials who raised $61,139 and finished as the 12th ranked team in Canada last season.  Medicine Hat Tigers forward Miles Koules led all CHL players in individual fundraising with $5,336 raised.

Movember supports world class men’s health programs that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programs, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
