Canadian Interuniversity Sports handed out its 2002-03 hockey awards in Fredericton, New Brunswick on Wednesday night and graduates from the Canadian Hockey League dominated the awards banquet.



CHL grads captured all three of the major awards that were presented and eleven CHL grads were named to the All Canadian team. In addition five of the six honourable mention All Canadians were awarded to former CHL players and all six of the players named to the All Rookie team played in the CHL before moving on to university.


Alexandre Tremblay of the Universite du Quebec a Trois Riveries Patriotes was awarded the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the CIS Player of the Year. Tremblay played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Laval Titan, Shawinigan Cataractes and the Rimouski Oceanic playing in 246 games and recording 278 points on 137 goals and 141 assists. The native of Beauport, Quebec was a member of Rimouski's 2000 Memorial Cup winning team. Tremblay led the CIS in scoring this season recording 56 points on 32 goals and 24 assists in just 21 games and his play helped the Patriotes qualify for the CIS championship tournament for a sixth consecutive year. Tremblay was also named to the All Canadian team for the second time in his three years at UQTR.


The CIS Rookie of the Year Award went to Dean Beuker of the University of Saskatchewan. Beuker won the Canada West Scoring title and finished second in CIS scoring this season posting 46 points on 16 goals and 30 assists. Beuker was also selected as an All Canadian and he is also a member of the CIS' 2002-03 All Rookie team. A native of Watson, Saskatchewan, Beuker played in 272 games in his four seasons in the Western Hockey League. As a member of the Portland Winter Hawks and the Regina Pats Beuker recorded WHL career point totals of 79 goals, 104 points and 183 points.


Former London Knight captain Joel Scherban was selected as the CIS' Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year. In his second year at Lakehead University, Scherban picked up only four minutes in penalties this season as he helped Lakehead qualify for its first ever appearance at the CIS championship tournament. A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Scherban recorded 32 points on 10 goals and 22 assists and had a plus-minus rating of plus 21 this season. In five seasons with the Knights Scherban played in 234 games recording 191 points on 72 goals and 119 assists. In his five years in the Ontario Hockey League Scherban was assessed only 46 penalty minutes.


Graduates of the CHL dominated the 2002-03 CIS All Canadian team as 11 of the 12 spots and five of the six honourable mentions went to former CHL players. Included on the list of All-Canadians is Dan Hulak of the University of Saskatchewan who, as a member of the Portland Winter Hawks, was selected as the CHL's Scholastic Player of the Year in 2000-01.
