On November 12, 2012, the most exclusive club in the game of hockey will welcome four new members – Pavel Bure, Adam Oates, Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin. Each will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player’s Category, each one having made a significant contribution to the game of hockey.
The “Russian Rocket” Pavel Bure burst onto the NHL’s radar in 1992 and would soon establish himself as one of the game’s elite goal-scorers. Five times he reached the iconic 50-goal mark and in consecutive seasons he surpassed 60 goals. Bure’s .623 goals-per-game average ranks among the best of all-time.
Adam Oates will forever be known as one of the most prolific setup men in NHL history. On three occasions he led the league in assists, including 97 in 1993. The crafty centre surpassed the 100-point level four times and at the time of his retirement ranked 6th in NHL career assists and 13th in points.
Joe Sakic spent his entire 20-year NHL career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise, where he took the club to heights it had not seen before. In 1996 and 2001, he led the Avalanche to Stanley Cup titles, being named playoff MVP in 1996. On the international stage, Sakic helped Canada win gold at the 2002 Olympic Games where he was again named most valuable player.
After four seasons with the Quebec Nordiques, Mats Sundin joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994 and would soon emerge as one of the greatest players franchise history. To date, Sundin is the Maple Leafs’ all-time leader in goals and points. In addition, Sundin served as captain of the gold medal-winning Swedish team at the 2006 Olympic Games.
