The 2011-12 Stanley Cup Champions will be powered by OHL talent as a total of 14 graduates are still in the mix to hoist the NHL's top prize.
The Stanley Cup Finals begin Wednesday night featuring a New Jersey Devils lineup led by former OHL coach Peter DeBoer and four past players, up against a Los Angeles Kings lineup that boasts 10 OHL graduates.
DeBoer coached 13 OHL seasons accumulating 539 wins good for a .662 win percentage and capped off with a league title in 2008 with the Kitchener Rangers. He also won a MasterCard Memorial Cup title with the Rangers win 2003, a team led by Kings forward Mike Richards.
“It’s hard to believe it’s already been seven years,” Richards said. “He’s such a smart hockey coach, not only Xs and O’s, but knows how to get the most out of his players. In games, he’s very smart at matchups and stuff like that.”
"Winning follows him around," said DeBoer. "We won a Memorial Cup together, we won a world junior championship together. So he's obviously a special kid and I'm very happy to see what he's done. Not surprised. "But I also know Mike Richards would run you over with his car to win a Stanley Cup," he added with a laugh. "He'd visit you in the hospital after."
Richards is one of five OHL grads competing in the series who also won an OHL title including his Rangers' teammate David Clarkson of the Devils in 2003. Cam Janssen of the Devils won a Robertson Cup with Guelph Storm in 2004, while Devils rookie Adam Henrique won back-to-back OHL and Memorial Cup titles with the Windsor Spitfires in 2009-10. For the Kings, Andrei Loktionov played with Henrique for the Spits' first title in 2009.
